In a hospital's sterile processing department, it's critical to ensure that every load of surgical instruments getting sterilized actually comes out as such. In order to do so, technicians periodically use biological indicators–small viles containing microbes –that they can add to a sterilizer cycle then incubate to see if the microbes thrive or perish. If nothing grows upon incubation, this indicates that the sterilizer is functioning properly. This process of sterility assurance can take up to four hours to complete and may hold up key surgical instruments for use.
